Leander Transit Village Initial planning is currently underway for this 160-acre tract which surrounds the future commuter rail station. Leander is the terminus of the first Austin metro area commuter rail line (The Red Line) running from Leander to downtown Austin, projected to begin full passenger rail operations in mid 2008. The site development manager is Hughes Capital Management who is coordinating a master plan for a combination of uses to include retail, office, single family, multi-family and vertical mixed use development. For information on sites Torte Gallas Concept Study - August 2007 City of Leander TOD In 2005 Leander adopted a 2,300-acre Transit Oriented Development (TOD) community plan to encourage Leander to become a more dense, walkable, pedestrian-oriented community. The TOD incorporates transportation by automobile along the soon-to-open Hwy 183-A toll road, as well as the MetroRail commuter rail line that will begin operating in 2008, tying Leander to downtown Austin and the stations in between. Areas of the TOD are designated by intensity level in the form of a Transect Map which illustrates the comprehensive plan for the Leander community and spells out various kinds of uses based on the expected intensity of future development. In addition, the city adopted a "Smart Code" of development regulations to guide specific development characteristics within the TOD area. Together the Transect map and Smart Code are the basis for planned approvals for future uses, creating a new-urban, walkable, pedestrian-friendly town core.
